A chipmunk scratches at my window

For nuts, for more

For I am the ‘have’ of nuts

And it the ‘have not’

I gave it some nuts

And in this felt real joy

That I had helped a kindred spirit

…..

What a small little thing you are

A cute little nibbler, responsible and aware

In search of food for you and you little ones

Going out every day fullfilling your duties

I see you in me, and me in you

Same repetitive battles every day

….

Little nibbler,

You teach me the way of Sisyphus better than anyone

Rolling your rock up the hill of each day

Coming to my door

Under the keen eye of the hawks above

Not knowing if I’ll be there

Or whether I’ll be generous

Still you come to my door, asking, waiting.

…..

Oh Chipmunk, little unit of life

So small, contained, and capable

You are a potent ball of rolling anti-entropy

A daily defiance against death

Against dissipation into nothingness

A circling eddy of temporary freedom

In a universe of chaotic unfolding

For a brief time you show the world

How to live a life of acceptance

If you get a nut, great

If you don’t, try again for another nut

For something else

No complaints

Just a little thing with wiggling whiskers

Going up the hill in search of nuts

I wish I was more like you
